Carolina Food & Wine Tours

This tour is different from other North Carolina wine tours in that you will taste wine from a variety of NC vineyards with food complementary chosen for each glass. All of this while being driven through the beautiful Yadkin Valley countryside.

This is tour is for locals who want to know more about North Carolina’s agriculture and for visitors who want an introduction to a beautiful region only 90 minutes from Charlotte. To accentuate the trip, we have picked amazing bottles of wine beforehand & matched them with local foods in order to highlight the flavor.

This is not a sweet wine tour. We will try several French & Italian varietals: Piccione Montepulciano Rosé, Raffaldini Sangiovese & McRitchie Port from Merlot. Plus, our secret vineyard will have estate grown Viogner, Malbec & Petit Verdot.

Wine tours are every Friday and Sunday.

The Carolina Food & Wine Tour is $197 per person or $377 per couple, and is offered every Friday & Sunday, subject to availability. Our goal is to feed you well, often and ply you with copious amounts of wine. We also serve snacks & bottled water during transport to and from Charlotte.

Our tours usually last from about 9:30am on Fridays and  10:00am on Sundays to about 6:00pm.

This is a very social tour consisting of 6 – 12 wine wanderers. Transportation depends on group size and this could be anything from a Chevrolet Suburban to a 15 passenger van.

Pick-up is from Assorted Table Wine Shoppe @ 7th Street Market in Uptown Charlotte.

    Not Included

    • Standard wine tastings at each vineyard except surprise vineyard.
    • Food outside of what is indicated.
    • Gratuities for guides/drivers.

How is this tour different? Most tours essentially chauffeur you around wine country stopping at a number of vineyards. You pay for the transportation and maybe a picnic lunch but none of the tastings. We are different as we want to show off North Carolina’s amazing culinary prowess along side its wine. We selected our vineyards for their amazing quality and hand picked 1-2 bottles from each estate to sample along with perfect local foods.

What wines will I try on this tour? There will be no Muscadine or Scuppernog wines on this tour. We are focusing mainly on French & Italian varietals such as Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon & Malbec. Plus we have a very special tasting that includes chilled Port from Merlot.

How old must I be to go on this tour? You must be 21 or older. Valid ID will be required or your tour will be forfeited.

Where do we meet the tour? We are meeting at Assorted Table Wine Shoppe inside the 7th Street Market in Uptown Charlotte. There is a pay by the hour parking deck (pricey) but we recommend taking the light rail to the 7th Street station. There are many light rail stations with free parking available. Look for our guide in the Charlotte shirt.

What time do we meet? We meet at 9:30am on Friday’s and 10am on Sundays.

How much wine are we consuming? We estimate 5-7 full glasses of wine will be served throughout the day plus a couple surprise tastings. This does not include any additional tastings (or beer) you purchase directly from the vineyards.

What if I don’t like red wine? We are tasting many varietals on this tour and there will be ample opportunities to try more than one type of wine such as Rosés & whites from Chardonnay, Voigner and Vermentino varietals. Many vineyards also offer non-wine options such as cider & beer.

Do you have to only drink what is provided on the tour? Absolutely not. You are welcome to do the full tastings at each vineyard (not included) as long as it falls within our length of stay. You are also encouraged to buy any bottles you like, as many only sell their wines at the vineyard.

What are we eating on this tour? Will I be hungry when we finish? Our goal is to feed you often and well during this tour. We have food pairings at each vineyard and will have plenty of snacks during our drive. The daily menu consists of local goat cheese & crackers, Italian meatballs, a huge BBQ sandwich, brownies and chocolate chip cookies.

What if I am a vegetarian? Honestly, this wine tour is better suited to carnivores but we will have several vegetarian options. We will try and accommodate you to the best of our ability. Please contact us directly if you have any special dietary restrictions that would hinder your fun.

How long are we staying at each vineyard? We are estimating a stay of 45 – 60 minutes at each vineyard.

What is the cancellation policy? No refunds are given within 72 hours of the wine tour date. We will allow you to reschedule to a future Big Fat Wine Tour date or use your registration towards any Big Fat World Tours trip.

  • Each tour is hosted by a resident NC wine gal.

    The Itinerary

    Meeting Spot
Assorted Table Wine Shoppe @ 7th Street Market. Before we begin, we are doing our 1st tasting inside the market at Assorted Table Wine Shoppe. Here we are pairing a Carolina classic breakfast item, the Krispy Kreme doughnut with its Carolina wine counterpart. This sweet union will give you an idea of what’s to come on this all day food & wine tour.

    Stop #1
Shiloh General Store. Deep in the heart of wine country is a Amish owned and operated general store. We are stopping here briefly to pick up some provisions. After a 90 minute drive, you are encouraged to get out and stretch your legs. (Not available on Sundays)

    Stop #2
Piccione Vineyards. Founded in 2010, this vineyard with deep Italian roots brings a a distinct Italian flare to its wines grown from Montepulicano and Nero Amaro varietals. Savor the view and their Provence style Rosé from Montepulciano grapes. We are tasting this crisp clean & dry wine along with local goat cheese & crackers.

    Stop #3
Raffaldini Vineyards. Perhaps one of the most beautiful vineyards in Yadkin wine country, Raffaldini has been making Italian inspired wines for decades. We are digging into a couple of their finest reds from Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes. In addition, you will delight in some hearty meatballs & brownies/chocolate chip cookies.

    Stop #4
McRitchie Vineyards. Tucked into the NW corner of Yadkin wine country is McRitchie Vineyards. This vineyard was recently featured in Food and Wine magazine for its standout wines and boasts a local hard cider. You will taste a couple of our favorites at this stop. We are pairing Queen City Q with a 2015 Ring of Fire red. As an added bonus, we are also pairing their 2010 “the wine formally known as…” Port with a couple cubes of ice. This combination goes extremely well with BBQ.

    Stop #5
Surprise Vineyard. Our last stop will be a surprise but will be no less delicious. We are doing a full wine tasting of their grown on property estate wines along with snacks.
