Spend 8 days on a Portugal Food and Wine Tour. Portugal is one of Europe’s last great countries for wine, history and culture. We are going to have an amazing trip with 3 nights in Porto and 4 nights in Lisbon with day trips to Sintra and Douro wine valley.
Our trip begins in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal and the cultural & entertainment center of the country. Then we proceed to Porto, a UNESCO site, which is no surprise once see all the architectural gems this city has to offer.
This is an epic trip through Portugal’s past and present in culture, history, and food.
Lisbon is the best place to start in Portugal. There is so much to see & do in this city from the Castelo de S. Jorge to the neighborhoods of Baixa-Chiado and Bairro Alto. Lisbon sits upon 7 hills and while we can’t avoid walking up some of them, they offer some amazing views.
After Lisbon, we travel to Porto to see Portugal’s smaller scrappier sister. Porto was declared, São Bento railway station, Se Catedral, and Cais da Ribeira to name a few. From Porto, we will take an amazing day trip to the Douro wine valley, perhaps one of the most awe inspiring and beautiful wine growing regions in the world. The region is full of grape growing terraced hills with the Douro river flowing between them. There is no mistake that douro means golden in Portuguese.

Stretching along the banks of the Douro, Porto (sometimes written as Oporto) has a decidedly different city in feel from bohemian Lisbon. Known for majestic bridges, medieval riverside district with its cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and cafes, Porto is also well known for one more thing; surprise surprise – Port.
On our days in Porto, we will explore the local area on foot with trips to the famous Sao Bento railway station, which is decorated in gorgeous blue tiles that depict famous battles of Portugal, a walk along the Ribeira, Porto’s riverside, and a stop for Portugal’s famous petiscos, or tapas. Plus there are churches, parks and viewpoints at every turn. This city will not disappoint. Be on the look-out for Harry Potter references as we stroll along the city from the famous Lello Bookstore to the caped university students.

Today, we are going to wine country. We are going to enjoy a full-day of the Douro Valley. We will see the beautiful landscapes of the Douro River region on a relaxing drive around the villages that hug the river and see the many stepped terraces and vineyards where port is made. We will visit several wineries (called Qunitas) and enjoy a lunch at a traditional restaurant before returning to Porto in the late afternoon.
Douro is quite an eye opener and you will want to stop and take photos every 3 minutes. We will incorporate as many miradouros (viewpoints) as we can. These are usually on the top of hills and show the valley and river below in such stunning fashion.

Megan went to Portugal a couple times in 2017 and immediately knew it would be a great location for a food & wine trip. She was taken by it’s charm, blue tiled buildings and large quantities of delicious wine.
