Come spend 8 days in Iceland and run the Reykjavik marathon. This is a trip that combines seeing the country with achieving a bucket list item of running a marathon in another country. The Iceland Marathon is set for August 19, 2017 and we have a several days of excursions planned to get acquainted with the country before and after the big run and a recovery day at Iceland’s most famous thermal pool, the Blue Lagoon.
This trip is 3 days longer than the 2016 Marathon trip to take advantage of some great spots we missed in 2016. New in 2017 are the Westman Islands, Vik, Eyjafjallajökull volcano, Akureyri and Lake Myvatn.
This trip will feature a massage therapist, Becca Bazzle from Essential Therapy, who will be giving pre and post race massages for all runners. This trip is open to runners and non-runners.
The capital city and heart of all things cool, hip, modern and fashionable. We have a couple days to explore Reykjavik. The city is extremely walkable and the sheer amount of restaurants and cafes will keep us occupied and fed while the best shopping will be along mod Langavegur street. Keep your eyes peeled for some of Reykjavik’s amazing street art, which is in abundance along city buildings.
Hope you are stretched & ready. The marathon starts in the morning and will cover spots all over Reykjavik. Becca Bazzle will be giving pre race massages for those running and for anyone not running, we will explore the city a little more. It’s going to be a big party in Reykjavik.
After you finish, we have the entire day afternoon to explore and relax. The city will be full of people and most of the streets will be closed to traffic. Trust me, you will want some time to yourself as we have a busy trip ahead of us. The race also provides day passes to a Reykjavik thermal pool so you can go there in the afternoon to soak. Becca Bazzle will also be giving afternoon massages.
Today is a bit of fun, we head outside of Reykjavik to the Laxnes Horse farm. It’s a family run establishment and we get our 1st taste of riding authentic Icelandic horses. The ride is about 2 hours long and weaves across some cool landscape with a waterfall finish.
After the horses, we drive to the most famous spot in Iceland, the Blue Lagoon. This geothermal spa’s healing waters will relax your tired muscles and boost your spirits. We will stay here 1/2 the day and once you see it, you will know why. The Blue Lagoon has waterfalls, steam rooms and saunas for use. We will enjoy the day and have lunch at the Lava restaurant.
Let’s get out of the south and head north to Iceland’s 2nd largest city, Akureyri and nearby Lake Myvatn. This will be a super long day we we need to catch a flight north to Akureyri where we will drive along the coast of Eyjafjordur fjord, across the mountain pass Vikurskard to the valley of Fnjoskadalur, then to a waterfall called Godafoss and onward to Lake Myvatn, we explore the regular shaped pseudo craters formed in a volcanic eruption approximately 2300 years ago. After the lake, we have an opportunity to to go to the Myvatn Nature Baths. The North doesn’t receive many visitors and it’s the exact reason I have included it on the trip.
We include a drive out of Reykjavik along the Southern ring road to a couple waterfalls and the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano (say that 3 times fast) onward to the black sand beaches of Vik. On our way back, we take the ferry to the Westman Islands where we will stay the night. This island is famous for a 1974 volcanic eruption which covered 25% of the island in it’s fiery wake. There is a charming open air museum we can check out as well. The island is small enough that we can walk it.
Today is your last day in Iceland. Departures range from 10 am to as late as 5pm. Depending on individual departures, you will have time to further explore Reykjavik. This trip includes all transportation to the airport. The drive to the airport takes 45 minutes and the airport requires all departures arrive 2.5 hours prior to flight time.

Megan went to Iceland in 2013, again in 2015 & ran the Reykjavik 10k in 2016. She spent time in thermal pools, hiked a volcano and sat under a glacier. She loves Icelandic skyr, which is an amazing local yogurt (technically classified as cheese) and the black sand beaches of Vik.
Becca is a licensed massage & bodywork therapist and owner of Essential Therapy. She is coming on the trip to offer massage therapy to all the runners. She went to Iceland with us in 2016 & is very excited to go back & eat rotten shark & run a 5k.
